Chapter Eight

The game didn’t last too much longer after that. There were only a few more humans to find, and as the hours went by so did everyone’s resolve to stay hidden.

Lucas just kept a close eye on Alex. She noticed, but didn’t comment, choosing instead to simply stay close to him as they hunted the rest of the club in the dark. At the same time, Lucas couldn’t ignore the constant looks Dean was giving him. He knew that they were going to have to talk, to establish lines and boundaries that the other werewolf didn’t want crossed, but Lucas just didn’t care at the moment. He didn’t have a problem, Dean did, just like his brothers had always had. They’d always known that they could do almost anything they wanted because Lucas wasn’t nearly big enough to fight back, wolf form or no wolf form.

“That was a good game, everyone,” Sally congratulated them as she collected the orange bandanas back. “Don’t forget to join us for our next invasion on Saturday! Same time, same place.”

Alex and Lucas were the first to take off.

It seemed like all the other members were friends, probably since they had all played together the year before, and it left Lucas and Alex feeling a little like outsiders. Besides, Lucas wanted to get out of there before Dean tried to force him on another smoke break.

“Alex,” Lucas said once they were back at building B. “What happened earlier? And please don’t say nothing.”

Slowing her steps, Alex looked up at Lucas through her eyelashes. She was searching his face, looking for something, and Lucas gulped as she finally turned her eyes away.

“Can we go up to my room?” she asked. “I don’t want to discuss this here.”

“O-of course,” Lucas agreed. “But what about your roommates—”

“Just follow me,” she shook her head, already walking toward the elevator.

Lucas had never ridden on it, and as he stepped inside after Alex, he couldn’t help but feel creeped out. “You’d think they’d update it,” he muttered, staring at the crude graffiti on the walls and rusted buttons. Alex only shrugged.

“It’s not going to end up on the front of a brochure, so why would they?” Pushing the blurry button that had a giant black number four on it, Alex stood back as the doors dinged closed with a groan and the elevator was lifted up.

The pace was excruciatingly slow, and Lucas glanced at Alex a number of times throughout the ride. She was standing stock-still, her face blank as she stared at the warped metal before her.

With a final, wrecked ding, the doors opened. Lucas followed Alex into the hall, his eyes immediately drawn to the first door on the left. “Uh,” he said, eyeing the explosion of red, blue, and pink glitter that caked what was once a perfectly brown wooden door. “What?”

Alex looked too, rolling her eyes. “It’s the RA’s door,” she explained. “I think she was a cheerleader in a past life.”

Lucas stepped over the streamers
